Responsible gambling
Gambling is a paid form of entertainment with a negative expected return. That is not a moral position, it is arithmetic: the payout schedule is built to return less than it takes, and no amount of skill at a slot alters it. Everything on this page follows from accepting that sentence rather than arguing with it.
The tools, in order of proportionality
| Tool | What it constrains | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Money over a period | Always — the default, set before the first deposit |
| Session reminder | Time | When evenings run longer than intended |
| Loss limit | Net losses in a window | When the budget is clear but discipline slips mid-session |
| Cooling-off | Access, short term | When momentum rather than pattern is the problem |
| National self-exclusion | Access across all licensed operators | When limits are being circumvented rather than observed |
The ordering matters. Reaching for the heaviest instrument at the first sign of discomfort is as unhelpful as never reaching for it at all. A deposit limit that holds is worth more than an exclusion never filed.
Why Latvia’s register is the strong instrument
Most markets leave self-exclusion to individual operators, which produces a barrier that ends at one company’s boundary. Latvia runs a central register of refusal to participate in gambling, held by the Lotteries and Gambling Supervisory Inspection, and an entry in it reaches every licensed operator in the country simultaneously. The application is filed by the person concerned, the term is selected from the options the framework provides, and because the register sits with the state no commercial party can waive it. The practical detail is covered under self-exclusion.
One limit is worth stating plainly: the register protects a reader inside the licensed perimeter. Sites operating without a Latvian licence appear on the inspection’s blocked-domains list instead, and nothing about the register applies to them. That is one more reason the register lookup described throughout this site belongs before an account exists.
Signals that appear before money does
- Sessions that run past the point they were meant to end, repeatedly rather than once.
- Thinking about the next session while doing something else.
- Becoming vague or defensive when the subject comes up with people close to you.
- Depositing again immediately after a loss, to recover it rather than to play.
- Treating a win as evidence of a method rather than as an outcome.
None of these is proof of a problem in isolation. Two or three together, persisting over weeks, are worth taking seriously — earlier than feels necessary, because the tools are far easier to use before they feel urgent.
What does not help
Staking systems do not work: adjusting bet sizes leaves the payout schedule untouched, and a system that appears successful is describing a short run rather than a mechanism. „Due" outcomes do not exist, because independent events have no memory. And a bigger bonus is not a solution to a losing month — accepting one attaches a wagering condition, which increases required turnover at exactly the wrong moment. The mechanics are under wagering requirements.
Where to find help
The supervisory inspection publishes the practical detail on filing a self-exclusion application and on the counselling and support options available in Latvia. That is the correct source, and we deliberately do not reproduce helpline numbers or organisation names here — an out-of-date number in a moment of need is worse than sending someone to the current list. Operator-side routes for setting limits are described under support. This site is written for adults of 18 and over.
