Bet Types Guide: Singles, Accas and Systems

Every bet structure in a sportsbook is a way of trading probability against payout, and each one has a cost attached that is not printed next to the price. This page works through them in euro so the trade is visible rather than implied.

Reading a decimal price

Prices are decimal, which multiplies the total stake rather than expressing profit alone. A 20 € stake at 2.40 returns 48 € in total, of which 28 € is profit. The reciprocal gives the implied probability: 1 divided by 2.40 is about 42 percent. Doing that division on every outcome in a market and adding the results is the most useful habit in betting — the total always exceeds 100 percent, and the excess is the operator margin.

On a tightly priced hockey or basketball market that excess might be a few percent. On an obscure prop it can be considerably more. Comparing the excess across markets tells you where you are being charged most, which no individual price ever reveals on its own.

The single

One selection, one price, one margin. It is the structure with the lowest built-in cost and the one operators promote least, which is informative in itself. For a bettor trying to profit rather than to be entertained, most of the volume should sit here.

Combinations

An accumulator multiplies the prices of several selections into one bet, and every leg must win. Four selections at 1.80 produce a return multiple of roughly 10.5 — a 10 € stake returning about 105 €, which is why they are attractive. The problem is that the margin multiplied along with the odds. Each leg carried the operator charge, and four of them compound into a considerably larger charge than four separate singles would have paid.

That is the whole economics of combination betting, and it explains why accumulator promotions are so common. A structure that costs the bettor more is a structure worth advertising. Systems

A system covers every combination of a given size drawn from your selections. A 2-from-4 places all six possible doubles; a 3-from-5 places all ten possible trebles. One losing leg no longer destroys the bet, because the combinations that avoided it still settle. The cost is arithmetic rather than hidden: six doubles at 5 € each is a 30 € outlay, not 5 €, and it is a common mistake to enter a system while thinking of the unit stake as the total.

Systems suit a set of selections you like roughly equally and none of which you are confident about individually. They do not rescue a set of bad selections; they simply distribute the damage.

Handicaps, totals and the rest

• Handicap. A margin applied to one side before settlement, turning a lopsided fixture into a two-sided question.
• Totals. Over or under a combined score line — driven by pace and style far more than by relative quality.
• Double chance. Two of three outcomes at a shorter price, mainly useful in football where the draw is real.
• Outrights. A tournament winner backed in advance, with money committed for weeks or months.
• Props. Individual player or event markets, usually the widest margins on the board.

Staking, in euro

A fixed fraction of bankroll is the only plan that survives contact with a losing week. One to two percent per bet, held constant, means a 300 € bankroll produces stakes of 3 to 6 € — small enough to feel unexciting, which is exactly why it works. The plans that fail are the ones that scale with confidence, because confidence peaks precisely when a run of results has just distorted your judgement.
